The Accident

They say that when you are about to have a major accident you have a premonition, even if it is at the very last moment. They say wrong.

One fine evening, I was driving home from work. Though often accused of rash driving, on that particular day I was driving at a nice comfortable speed, enjoying the warmth of the evening sun.

As I reached a bend on the road, after a straight stretch, I saw a big car coming too fast and it was evident that it would not be able successful negotiate the sharp curve. I slowed down as I realized in horror that this car was going to fly straight off the road and down the 100 feet drop.

Fortunately for him, an electric pole was in his way and his car crashed into the pole sideways. I was thankful to the pole for having saved some precious lives, but I had no time to be thankful, because the driver of the other car did not stop nor slow down. He just steered into the road at the same speed as he was going before and crashed into the side of my small car.

So, within seconds of feeling sorry for the occupants of the other car, I was feeling sorry for myself. And yet, I think, I was smiling at the moment that immediately followed the accident.

There was blood all around. I was not really hurt, but one of my lips was cut open and that had been the cause of all the blood. My glasses were bent out of shape and the car was a wreck. In fact, the impact was so strong that the car was completely turned around and was now facing the direction from which I was originally coming. But what took the cake and made me smile (and at that time I thought it was just like a scene out of a movie) was the fact that in the silence that followed the crash, the only sound that broke the silence was the stereo, still playing the sad song that seemed apt for the moment.

(This happened a few years back , sometimes in 2004)
