BYBS - A Dog's Life

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions)

What is a dog's life worth? ...and this is not a rhetorical question.

The answer will vary from one person to another, and from one situation to another. For instance, in the case I am going to cite, seeing a dog running and alive made my day, maybe my whole week.

I was driving to work - I think it was Wednesday - and as usually happens after driving for few kilometers, I fell into a kind of a reverie, thinking about the days that have been and the days that were to be. When, out of the blue, a stray dog appeared right in front of the car from nowhere. But that's a lie.

I think I did see it from the corner of my eye on the side of the road. But, I never expected it to jump right in front of my car like it had.

I think I saw it from the corner of my eye on the side of the road. But, I never expected it to jump right in front of my car like it had. I did the only thing I could do in a situation like that. I slammed hard on the brakes.

The car screeched to a halt, and the dog disappeared under the car. I was pretty sure that contact had been made between the animal and the machine, but how bad it was, I couldn't be sure. Then to my intense relief and amazement, the dog ran out from under the car. It crossed the road and looked back at me.

It looked alright, just a bit annoyed... maybe angry. And it had every right to be.

But on that bright and sunny Wednesday morning, there were two souls that had something to feel blessed about. After all, no one likes to die, and no one likes to start a day by taking a life.

Have a great week ahead!

That dog was blessed this week.

If I had been reading that blog under any other day than BYB day, I would have imagined it had met its fate and that you were telling a sad tale of woe. Indeed a blessing for both you and the dog.

Mine is connected to a spider and its web this week -- come and see.

A narrow escape for you both.

You are both blessed.

Happy BYB Sunday

Neo,
That was a heart-stopping story! I'm glad you both survived! Dogs, like the squirrels that seem to play chicken with oncoming traffic, bring us back to mindfulness!

What is a dog's life worth? I think as much as any life.

Now I need a cup of coffee.

God bless your Sunday.

I'm a little confused by the question vs. the story... all life is sacred to me... save perhaps mosquitoes and other insects that feel I am food to them... but as a dog owner (times two,) if either one of my boys fell for some reason, my grief would be equal to that had a MUCH favoured cousin or aunt/uncle passed...

As for your near-miss, I'd say that the blessing is that you'll probably be a little more cautious and attentive on the road now, n'est pas?

My dogs are part of my family so I cannot put an amount or worth on their life because to me they are priceless. Great post!

My entry is online now too :)

Gina: It was indeed!

Paulie: Nope, no sad tale of woe at all.

Msdemmie Happy BYB Sunday to you too.

Sandy: I agree with you when you say that a dog's life is worth any other life...and they do bring us back to mindfulness.

Doubledeckerbusguy: I don't know if I can explain the question, but I will try.

It is not very uncommon here to see a stray dog lying on the road that has been passed over by a passing car or truck. It stays there on the road for an amount of time and people try their best to drive in a way to avoid going over it, but if they have to, they do.

So, when, for a moment, I thought that I might have run over the dog, I felt very guilty and I guess that was when that question arose in my mind.

Thankfully the dog was fine and alright!

And yes, I will be more careful from now on.

Sue: I am sure they are priceless. :)

I have wrecked my car to avoid hitting a dog. No one understood, but I could not have dealt with the death.

Oh wow! That is one of my worst fears- hitting an animal. I hit a raccoon once and it bothered me so much. I finally participated this week! I have my post up now. It's about the timing of getting home before, well, my tire exploding on the car.

Mrsnesbitt: It was a good day for me too!

Kuanyin: Happy BYB Sunday to you too!

Garden Gnome: It was indeed.

CyberCelt: I completely understand specially after the little incident I have talked about in my post.

Beth: My worst fear would be hitting a fellow human being, but hitting an animal is also on that list.
