The Individual and the Society…

A society is essentially a group of individuals. Each individual has his own ideas, dreams and aspirations. These individuals get together and try to find a way of growing together and help fulfill each others wants and desires. But, in this process of society building, does an individual lose his individuality? Does he start to want what others want…dream what others dream.

How far can an individual affect the thought of a society is the question? Is it possible for one person to transform society or is the thought of doing so vain and foolhardy?
If we look back into history we can find examples of individuals who were able to do just that. So, it can be said that it is indeed possible for an individual to transform the society--that very society which made him or her what he or she is.

The transformation process has to start from within oneself. In order to affect others one must be affected himself. One must be totally convinced that what he is doing is the right thing. There is no room for doubt and no room for vacillations. Total belief, dedication to the cause and willingness to sacrifice all,for what one believes in,are the prerequisites.

If one does not conform to the basic tenets of a society, he is scorned, laughed at and even ostracized. But if he has the tenacity and the will power to stick to what he believes in and has the ability to be unaffected by the pressures of society, more often than not he will have followers by the time his stay on this earth is over. Here it is pertinent to mention that we are talking about changes that make society a better place to live in.

Therefore non-conformism is important. It is rightly said that had Jesus conformed to the Jewish tradition, there would be no Christianity or no Buddhism if Buddha had stuck to his roots i.e. Hinduism.

What does defy an answer is this: what makes some people more capable of bringing about this change than others? Is it a gift of God or an art and talent that one develops and hones over a period of time.

you might want to read "The Lucifer Principle" by Howard Bloom.

He discusses this in detail.

Nice blog.

To follow society's highway is easy, to create your own path is difficult.

Most people never look up and see there can be another destination than where the highway directs them.

Of those that see something better, just a few are willing to get off the road and explore.

The questions raised are.

Will you look?

Will you change?

Will you blaze a path others can follow if they wish?

You'll probably think this is a weird answer, but I think some souls are older than others. Even though someone may just be 25, their soul may have been here many times more than someone who is 55. So they would have more wisdom, knowledge & conviction, knowing what they're doing is right.

Very thought provoking.

I agree with Jane. Although I do believe that in order to truly make a change in society it takes a group of people-not one person. One can always change their own path in life-it all comes down to the choices we make each day. One wrong choice can not only change our path, but the paths of those around us.

Yes, a society can make a person lose his individuality. But, as you said, if a person's will is strong enough,it shouldn't matter.
Reminds me of a story I wrote some time back...

JayB sent me over. Cool Landlord.

This question almost too heavy for me to answer. I think that there is an enormouse amount of good that can be accomplished when people are united by something in which they truly believe.
