BYBS: Solutions

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions)

In my last week 's BYB post, I had a listed a set of problems that I was facing at that time. At the end I had found my blessing in the problems. This past week was a continuation of that, in more ways than one. The problems were still the same, but they didn't pull me down anymore. Let me tell you why.

The first issue was NaNoWriMo. After trying my best to complete the fifty thousand words, and failing, I decided to let it go. But what affected me most was Matthew's comment :

First off... I'm noticing NaNoWriMo has put MORE people into a depressional funk than almost anything circulating through the blogosphere... I wonder if the originators "see" that???

The comment made me realise how we, human beings, can turn the best things around, and make them our bane. NaNoWriMo is a great idea, and I am sure it must have helped a lot of people write that novel that they had always wanted to write. And yet, some of us - including me - had found a way to make NaNoWriMo a problem, rather than a solution, that it was meant to be.

Then I remembered that a couple of years ago, I had set out to right a novel. After writing almost 90 % of it, I had given up. So, I decided to start from there, but the file was no where to be found on any of the computers I was using. I guess I must have deleted it at some point of time. I looked for the hard copy, as I had taken a print of most of it...and I found that.

So, I had about 50 pages, both sides, of text, and had to get that on the computer. A huge problem.

But, then, a colleague at work offered to do it for me, and now, I have all the text in a file on my computer. I am going to try and see if I can complete that novel and, then, get anyone interested in publishing it (If you know someone who could help me with that, feel free to tell them about my great writing skills. ;) ).

Then, the friend, whose marriage I was unable to attend, came to my town for his honeymoon, and I was able to meet him and his wife. That was another great thing about the past week.

Work is still keeping me busy, and like last Sunday, I have to go to work today. Though, I did not go last Sunday, I am going today. The batteries that I replaced last Sunday, seem to be working great.

Wishing everyone a great Sunday, and an even better week ahead!

I think the situation is anything that has a "limit" or "expectation" tends to become work and require effort... whereas when things "tumble" out of the person, it's more fun, creative, and most importantly for the artistic side of things, spontaneous.

None-the-less, I do appreciate your comment about finding a way to make a tool into a problem instead of an aid... :)

I had thought about participating in NaNoWriMo because I had wanted to put myself under the pressure of a deadline an be in the company of people doing the same. I attempted a draft, hated it, and let it go. Just wasn't the time. It's wonderful that you've returned to your previous draft and that you have it ready to roll again. If the whole process got you there, then it was a good thing.

Thanks for this great, candid post.

Great news! "Failure" this week also became my blessing. I did complete my goal of posting on my blog everyday in November in honor of NaNoWriMo. I was not writing a story tho. Recognizing my "troubles" as a blessing, I am at peace. Come see my blessing when you have time.

NaNoWriMo is a great idea, but it does put so much pressure. 50,000 words in such a short amount of time is difficult. I did a 10,000 word challenge one summer month a couple of years back, and even that killed me.

I'm glad things turned around a little for you anyway. I made a commitment to write at least one word a day... and that seemed to help.

That first word seems to be the hardest but if I sit down to write it, there's no way I'm not going to follow it up with at least a sentence. Pretty soon I have a page or two... sometimes ten. And if I only write one word because it was a rotten day, well I met my goal and my book is one word longer than it was.
