BYBS - Holi

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions.)

Saturday was Holi - a festival that is celebrated all across India, with great gusto.

It is popularly known as the festival of colours, as people put colors - both dry and wet - on each other. It is a festival where people forget past quarrels and become friends. It is a festival to that marks the beginning of spring. It is a festival where "bhang" (an intoxicating beverage derived from cannabis) is served to one and all. In short it is a festival to have fun, and have a good time.

Lately, the importance of such festivals has increased manifold, as most of us have found so much to do on our own that we hardly get time to meet our friends and neighbours. Festivals like Holi provide us with a chance to take a break, and just have a good time.

This year I decided to pass playing with colors on Holi. This is a hard thing to do, because someone is sure to come up to your house, and colour you in all hues. But, somehow I managed to save myself from being a victim to the colour brigade, especially as this year eggs and tomatoes were also being used as an alternative to color. And I for one would surely hate to have an egg cracked on my head.

And that talk about eggs reminds me that it is Easter on Sunday. Though we don't celebrate that in India, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Easter Holiday, after the Holi Holiday on Saturday!

Interesting to learn of other's customs. I celebrate easter today and will shortly go to a church service called Festival of Flowers which is a neat celebration where they take a cross which is covered in chicken wire and everyone adds fresh flowers to it as we sing. Then the cross is displayed outdoors for a few days to show how something as sorrowful as a cross can become a beautiful thing and remind us of our gift from Jesus of eternal life.

I was glad to see you post today as I haven't seen you around for awhile.

That sounds nice; especially the bit about stopping quarrels. Being able to let go of the past is a great gift.
