BYBS : Citius, Altius, Fortius !

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions.)

With the Olympic games on in Beijing, I did not have to look too far for a blessing this week. Sports, in general, and events like the Olympics, in particular, are a great blessing.

While I was thinking about what to write about, I remembered the motto of the Olympic games : Citius, Altius, Fortius ( Faster, Higher, Stronger)! For a moment it made me wonder if the Olympic Games were such a blessing after all. I mean, if it was all about the competition, and all about one man beating so many other men - who had worked just as hard - at a sporting event, then where, or what, was the Olympic spirit?

However, a little reflection on the subject made me realise that the Olympics, or any sport for that matter, is not about winning or losing (though winning can be the icing on the cake) but about playing well, and giving your best to the game. The spirit of sports lies in improving.

When they say Faster, Higher and Stronger, they don't want you to be to faster and stronger than your neighbour, but they only want you to be faster and stronger than you were the day before. The spirit of Olympics wants you to soar higher than you did ever before. In short, the spirit of Olympics lies in self- improvement; not only for the athletes, but for all those watching too.

The sad part is that due to lack of access to a television, I have not been able to follow the events live. I have tried to read about the games on the Internet and in the News Papers... but that too will have to take a backseat in the coming week, as I prepare to take on my mid-term exams for the semester.

Have a great week ahead!

Yes the spirit of the Olympics unites us all -- don't you wish it would last forever and not just show up for the Winter and Summer Olympics events?

Prayers for you for your upcoming exams. I have a post this week also and am doing much better -- in fact, I will be able to go camping with katney Monday!

I have known several Olympians in my life... and even if they don't win a medal, trust me, they really are proud and have the fondest of memories of just being there and doing it... at least, that's my experience!

Best of luck on the exams... when in doubt, choose answer "C"!

I have not been watching either as we do not have cable, but I do follow a bit online :) Neo can you please change my link in the blog roll to:

This is where my blessing is for today, and where I will be posting it from now on. Thanks so much!

Thanks, Neo! I was thinking about the Olympics today and how the games are really about testing one's mettle. It's possible to see each athlete competing with him or herself, primarily.

Good luck with those exams!

Paulie : Yeah, it would be great if the spirit of Olympics would be with us at all times. I am glad to hear you are doing better now. Thank you for your wishes!

DoubleDeckerBusGuy: I am sure being an Olympian must be a great feeling. I have not known any Olympian yet.

Thanks for your wishes for the exam. The exams are subjective type, otherwise I would have definitely gone for the "C".

Sue: I have already replaced your old URL with the new one. Have a great week ahead.

Sandy: Thank you for your wishes!

Hey, it's probably already Monday for you and I'm just finished posting my Sunday blessing. I'm always running a bit behind!

Loved the opening of the Olympics--chill bumps all over my family as we watched it!

Olympics--the best compete to see who is the very best. It is a privilege to see them. I hope that no scandals about steroids and hormones rock this one.

Like you, I see the Olympics as a ‘blessing’ and have been caught up in watching as much as I’m able. In fact, it motivated my BYBS post this week at Sacred Ruminations for much the same reasons you mentioned here.
Hugs and blessings,
