BYBS: An Everlasting Smile

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions.)

The other day, I had to go to the local market here to get some work done. It was the middle of a very hot and humid day. It was the kind of day when the best thing you can do is stay indoors - and rest - till the day cools off. Yet, the market was crowded. Everyone had something to do, and, like it or not, they were out there on the street with a very hot sun beating down upon them.

Suddenly, I noticed something in that crowd.

If the frown on one's face is an indicator, I could not see a single face in the crowd that seemed to be happy about being there. Then, I wondered, why was everyone there, if they would rather be somewhere else. The obvious answer to the question, it seems to me, is that all of us have work to do and that work sometimes leads us to places and things that we would have avoided otherwise.

So, I thought, now that I was here, it would be best if I went about doing what I had to do with a smile on my face ( I had by now realised that the expression on my face could also be best described only as a frown). Immediately, I felt better.

A lot of things have been said about the smile. It can help you make friends, it can make you confident, it improves your face value etc. etc. Here I am not going to repeat any of that. I am sure better men than me have written about that, and all you need to do is take the help of our tried and tested friend Mr. Google to find what these men and women have written. What I will say, though, is that however much you read about the power of positive things - like the smile - you can only get an idea of their true worth after experiencing the power yourself.

How, when, why that will happen is also something I can't say. But it will happen for sure. All you need to do is keep smiling! In the least, it will improve your face value. :-)

Just reading about your blessing made ME smile. Ü

I know you just made someone's day when they saw your smile amongst all the other stoic faces.

So very true, Neo! I find a smile often startles people. They, too, wonder, "What's to smile about?" And then they give it a try.

Beautiful post.

This is a lovely reminder of the power of a smile and a kind heart to turn away wrath and lighten the spirit. Thanks for sharing your experience today.
