BYBS - Reality Talent Shows

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions)

Last night I was watching the final episode of TVS - Sa Re Ga Ma, "Sangeet Ka Pratham Vishwa Yudh". It is a singing based reality show, not very different from American Idol. Now, I am not a great fan of reality shows, because I feel most of what they serve as reality is staged, and they try to play on the emotions of the gullible viewers.

But, like most things, nothing is all bad or all good. I realized that these shows are doing some good by providing an opportunity to talented people from small town, or little means, to perform on the big stage, and if they are good, they can continue from there on.

A few years ago, only someone who knew someone in the entertainment industry or, who was extremely talented and lucky, could establish themselves in the industry. But, now, if one has the talent, he or she has a fairly good chance to get noticed.

These days almost any channel worth it's name has a talent hunt of some sort or other going on. Though the sole purpose of these programs is to make money for the channels, yet these programs are helping a lot of people to showcase their talent, which otherwise would have been wasted.

In fact, someone from my town participated and won one such show on a sports channel, and is now a commentator for that channel. Also, in the show that I was watching last night, there was a girl, Poonam, with a great voice, who, before she got to star on the show, was working in a shop for only 600 Rs. (about 15 USD) a month. Though, unfortunately, she didn't win it, but she was able to make it to the top 4, and hopefully she will have a bright future ahead of her.

So, I think, these shows, though definitely a product of the increasing consumerism of our day, have a blessing side to them. What do you think?

Have a great week ahead!

P.S. - Oh, for the curious and, the ones that followed the show but don't know who won last night, it was Aneek, the 18 year old from Kolkatta who won. And for those who never heard of the show, but would want to know what it is about, just click on the names to watch the singers perform.

I think that most things do have a blessing to them, and that it is all in how we look at things in order to see it. Happy BYB Sunday! :)

Does it bring you joy? If so, it's a blessing.

I never thought about reality shows this way, but now that you mention it... I agree. I don't watch them, but it's an example of something that I hadn't considered worthwhile turning out to have a real value. Maybe I should take a closer look at other things I don't like and find worth in them also.

Very interesting slant on that show being a blessing. i think we can find blessings where we least expect them.

My blog for today is finally up -- I was too tired to wait 'til midnight last night and today I did not get to the computer 'til now. I have had it ready to post since last Thursday! OK off to read more about blessings.

It is a process that all people who want to succeed in the performing arts must go through. I do not like the behind-the-scenes shows, where they show the people auditioning and being humiliated.

When I was young, Dick Clark and Soul Train were ways to be discovered in my town.

Have a wonderful week.
