BYBS : Nostalgia!

(To join Blog Your Blessings Sunday, and get your name on the blogroll, click on the banner above and follow the simple instructions.)

As I began to write this post, I was not very sure whether feeling nostalgic is a good thing. I mean, after all, feeling nostalgic makes you focus on the past - a past that will never return, and it makes you feel that the future might never be as good as the time that has passed you by.

But, there is something about nostalgia that is good.

Earlier today, I was watching Rambo - IV (John Rambo), and I could not help but compare the new, but aged, Sylvester Stallone in the movie with his old, but young, self in the previous versions of Rambo. It made me think about a lot of things and, in some ways, it made me nostalgic. That made me wonder : if I was feeling the way I was, how must Sylvester Stallone be feeling when he made the movie, or when he made Rocky Balboa.

I am sure not everyone likes those movies, but there is an entire generation that spans countries and cultures which has grown up idolizing the two characters of Rambo and Rocky. For many Sylvester Stallone will always be known as either Rocky or Rambo. So, how must he have felt when he was making the two movies?

There must have been sadness for sure, but I feel that there must have been great satisfaction in making the two movies, knowing fully well that this was the last time he was being a part of a Rambo, or a Rocky movie.

Anyways, I think I am rambling here, so I will end here by saying that though I am not very sure if nostalgia is a good thing, I am very sure of the fact that every time I am nostalgic I feel motivated to make my future just a little bit better.

I can't agree or disagree on those particular movies since I never saw any of them BUT I can see the blessing in nostalgia. Good memories are there to help us through life. My blessing i up.

I think nostalgia can be good if it connects us with experiences that are valuable in some way--whether they leave us feeling loved or wiser or happier.

us being beings of selective memory, do keep most of our nostalgic memories with happy thoughts

a good thing def if it does help us to move ahead

He is part of history because of those movies and the song from Rocky will always make me think of someone triumphing over adversity.

I have nominated your blog for the Brillante Weblog Premio 2008 Award.

I too think that nostalgia is a good thing provided we do not dwell too much in the past, and that we try to learn from it if we can :) Hope your week has been going goodly!

The idea I remember from the Rambo movies was that a single person could persevere or make a difference. That a person could survive despite oppression. In a world that seems to go out of its way to remind me that I don't matter, I find this idea comforting.
